Make a list this Christmas

Heinz Frozen UK has announced that ‘Fairytale Of New York’ by The Pogues (featuring Kirsty MacColl) is the nations’ “favourite Christmas song to cook to”. The song, first released in 1987 , is also top of the list as far as drivers are concerned. A survey conducted by satnav manufacturer Garmin® reveals that 21% of motorists consider it their festive song of choice to drive along to.

What is it about Christmas that prompts such an obsession with lists? Present lists, shopping lists, To Do lists, best Christmas film lists, best Christmas song lists, Top 10 this, Top 10 that, year’s best films, year’s best books, funniest comedy series, funniest commercials, best blogs (vote for me!),  most amazing Wormhole Reports (okay I made that one up), etc, etc. Phew! That was becoming quite a list in itself. None of the ranking lists have any validity. It’s all subjective nonsense. So why do we do it? Please reply to this with your theories and I’ll publish a definitive list of them.

Here’s a song that you won’t find on any list. It was written and performed by my daughter, Lisa, when she was 16 years old :

About thespeedofdark

David Winship has written an unauthorised autobiography and several critically disdained literary tomes. His work is frequently compared with Steinbeck, Orwell and Hemingway, but unfortunately Mike Steinbeck, Daisy Orwell and Howard Hemingway were all terrible writers. He has been totally overlooked for the most prestigious literary awards worldwide, which is a shame as most of the words are spelled correctly. In fact, his books contain material that ranks with the finest literary works in history: all the right letters are there, just not necessarily in the right order.

Dave’s blog (The Speed Of Dark Blog) is part of his crusade for truth and justice and universal entitlement to free real ale. It may well be that his whole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.
