There’s a deliciously British irony about the fact that on Thursday we will turn out in droves to elect UKIP candidates as Members of the European Parliament – the very people who believe we shouldn’t belong to it!
The other part of the irony is that MEPs have no direct influence over the UK’s membership of the European Union and only Westminster would be able to take the country out of it. And UKIP currently has no MPs!
I don’t know what to make of it. Either this is evidence of our wonderful sense of humour, or, more likely I fear, we’re living in a post-irony era and nobody gets it!
