No violence, no terrorism, no armed insurrection. And yet, 12 peaceful advocates of the ballot box, nine of whom have already spent several months in prison, are now being prosecuted by the Spanish Supreme Court and may face prison sentences of between 10 and 25 years. Their crime? They simply proposed a referendum in 2017 to seek a Catalan republic separate from the Spanish monarchy.
Isn’t self-determination enshrined in international law? It’s staggering to think that such an act of state repression, one that is embarrassingly unworthy of a mature democracy, is taking place in the 21st century on EU territory.
