I’m having a strong sense of deja vu right now. It probably has a lot to do with the current national obsession with Margaret Thatcher’s passing and the endless analysis of her legacy. We’ve re-lived the economic nose-dive that precipitated her rise to power: rubbish in the streets, power cuts, bodies unburied, strikes, spiralling inflation, the three-day week and the Winter of Discontent. It’s not an exact parallel with the gloom that pervades our lives today, but there are broad similarities.
At the end of the seventies, salvation came in the form of the Iron Lady and North Sea oil.
So is it possible we’ve been back in the past to see the future? If you close your eyes tight and open them again: could that be Nigel Farage and shale gas?
